What tip percentage should I leave?
Standard tipping in the US is 15–20% for sit-down restaurants. 18% is a solid default for average service; 20%+ for great service. For takeout or counter service, 10–15% is common but not always expected.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional approach. Tipping on the total (including tax) is also common and usually results in only a small difference.
