How do I calculate sales tax on a price?
Multiply the pre-tax price by (tax rate ÷ 100). For example, a $50 item at 8.5% tax: $50 × 0.085 = $4.25 tax, making the total $54.25.
How do I remove tax from a total?
Divide the total by (1 + tax rate ÷ 100). For a $54.25 total at 8.5%: $54.25 ÷ 1.085 = $50.00 pre-tax. Use the 'Remove tax from total' mode for this.
Why do the state tax rates shown differ from what I pay locally?
The rates shown are state-level base rates. Most counties and cities add additional local sales tax on top. Your actual rate may be 1–4% higher depending on where you are.
